Tim Law and Mary Dispenza Speak Out in Rolling Stone on Church Abuse and the Battle for Justice

On July 20, 2025, Rolling Stone published a hard-hitting investigation titled “Trump, the Catholic Church, and the Fight to Change Child-Abuse Laws”, revealing how powerful Church lobbying efforts—often in alliance with political leaders—continue to block or roll back justice for survivors of clerical sexual abuse in the United States.

Among the prominent voices in the article are two dedicated advocates from the ECA Global network: Tim Law, co-founder of Ending Clergy Abuse (ECA) Global, and Mary Dispenza, a courageous survivor, former nun, and longtime activist for victims’ rights.

Tim Law, who also serves on the board of ECA Global, denounces the entrenched legal and political barriers that shield abusers:

“We can’t have a society where people get away with raping children simply because they’re wearing a collar or standing in a pulpit,” Law states.

He details how Catholic dioceses across the country have hired powerful lobbyists to kill statute-of-limitations reform, even as survivors continue to come forward in growing numbers. “It’s a betrayal of justice,” he explains.

Mary Dispenza, who works closely with survivors through advocacy and pastoral support, adds a deeply personal and moral dimension to the issue. As a survivor herself, she calls attention to the emotional and spiritual trauma caused not only by abuse, but by the Church’s failure to offer truth and accountability:

“The Church has chosen to protect itself, its reputation, its image, its resources—everything but the children,” she tells Rolling Stone.

She urges the Church to stop hiding behind legal tactics and finally take moral responsibility for its actions, emphasizing that healing cannot begin without full acknowledgment and repentance.

The article paints a chilling but necessary portrait of the power structures that continue to fail survivors—while also amplifying the voices of those, like Tim and Mary, who refuse to stay silent.

At ECA Global, we are proud to work alongside them and reaffirm our commitment to building a global movement for truth, justice, and accountability.
