Clerical Sexual Violence in Ecuador: Mapping Impunity

In August 2025, the Coalition Against Sexual Violence in Faith Spaces (COVSFE) and the collective Solidaridad en Misión released the first comprehensive report on clerical sexual abuse in Ecuador: Clerical Sexual Violence in Ecuador – Cartography of Impunity.

The investigation reveals the systematic and structural nature of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, documenting not only individual crimes but also patterns of institutional cover-up, re-victimization, and negligence. Based on testimonies from survivors, families, and communities across the country, the report shows how mechanisms of silence, reassignments of accused priests, and opaque canonical procedures have perpetuated a culture of impunity.

The study highlights the central role of victim testimony in uncovering abuse committed in secrecy, emphasizing international human rights standards that recognize these accounts as essential evidence. It also situates Ecuador within a global context, where similar dynamics have been documented in Spain, Germany, Ireland, the U.S., and Latin America.

COVSFE and Solidaridad en Misión call for urgent reforms:

• Opening Church archives to civil and judicial oversight.

• Establishing independent investigative mechanisms.

• Criminalizing clerical pederasty and institutional sexual violence in national law.

• Implementing truth, justice, and reparations policies with a guarantee of non-repetition.

Above all, the report insists that the voices of survivors must be heard, believed, and placed at the center of justice and reparation efforts. Breaking the silence is both an act of truth and a path toward transforming impunity in Ecuador.

Violencia Sexual Clerical en Ecuador: Cartografía de la Impunidad

En agosto de 2025, la Coalición de Lucha contra la Violencia Sexual en Espacios de Fe (COVSFE) y el colectivo Solidaridad en Misión presentaron el primer informe integral sobre el abuso sexual clerical en Ecuador: Violencia Sexual Clerical en Ecuador – Cartografía de la Impunidad.

La investigación demuestra el carácter sistemático y estructural de los abusos dentro de la Iglesia Católica, documentando no solo delitos individuales, sino también patrones de encubrimiento institucional, revictimización y negligencia. A partir de testimonios de sobrevivientes, familias y comunidades de distintas regiones, el informe revela cómo los mecanismos de silencio, la reubicación de sacerdotes denunciados y los procesos canónicos opacos han perpetuado una cultura de impunidad.

El estudio resalta el papel central del testimonio de las víctimas para develar abusos cometidos en secreto, en línea con los estándares internacionales de derechos humanos que reconocen estas voces como prueba fundamental. Asimismo, sitúa la realidad ecuatoriana en un contexto global, donde dinámicas similares han sido documentadas en España, Alemania, Irlanda, Estados Unidos y América Latina.

COVSFE y Solidaridad en Misión llaman a reformas urgentes:

• Apertura de los archivos eclesiásticos al control civil y judicial.

• Creación de mecanismos independientes de investigación.

• Tipificación penal de la pederastia clerical y la violencia sexual institucional.

• Implementación de políticas de verdad, justicia y reparación con garantía de no repetición.

El informe subraya que las voces de las víctimas deben ser escuchadas, creídas y puestas en el centro de la justicia y la reparación. Romper el silencio es un acto de verdad y el camino para transformar la impunidad en Ecuador.
